Jamdani Journeys talk hosted at the Royal Society of Arts

As part of South Asian Heritage Month, the Muslin Trust hosted a special event titled Jamdani Journeys: Weaving Identity Across Borders, held at the prestigious Royal Society of Arts in London. The talk explored the rich heritage of Jamdani weaving and its cultural significance across generations and geographies.

The event featured insightful presentations by Dr Sonia Ashmore, a respected historian and author, alongside Rifat Wahhab, the founding chair of the Muslin Trust. Dr Ashmore delved into the historical presence of Jamdani in the UK, tracing its journey from the colonial era to contemporary times, while highlighting its deep-rooted connections with South Asian textile traditions. Rifat Wahhab provided a broader historical perspective, shedding light on the ancient origins of muslin fabric and its evolution through different eras, reflecting on its socio-economic importance.

Following the talks, there was an engaging Q&A session where audience members had the opportunity to interact with the speakers, asking questions and sharing reflections on the themes discussed. The event was co-chaired by Poppy Jaman and Taryn Khanam, the Muslin Trust’s newest trustees, who guided the conversation with thoughtful moderation.

Photography for the event was provided by Saif Osmani on behalf of the Muslin Trust.
